So what is Zentangle®?

Zentangle is a method of drawing simple repeating patterns.  Just as beautiful as the designs that are created is the state of relaxed focus that comes from the practice of Zentangle.  Like yoga or meditation, this relaxed focus decreases stress, increases mindfulness, and enhances creativity.  The patterns are simple enough that anyone (and I do mean that – even if you think you’re the artistic equivalent of a person who can’t carry a tune in a bucket!) can create beautiful work.  You could see Zentangle as a metaphor for life… putting together the design of a beautiful life one simple little line at a time.

And how did Zentangle come about?  Well…

Once upon a time, not so very long ago, a man, Rick Roberts (a former monk and maker of native American flutes), was watching a woman, Maria Thomas (a tremendously talented calligrapher), putting details into an illuminated manuscript she was working on.  And the rest is history… bwahahaha!  Ok, I’m not that mean but, truly, better that you read it in their words:

“One day, Maria told Rick what she experienced as she drew background patterns on a manuscript she was creating. She described her feelings of timelessness, freedom and well-being and complete focus on what she was doing with no thought or worry about anything else.

“You’re describing meditation,” Rick said.

Rick and Maria wondered if they could create a simple system so others might enjoy a similar experience. And so began the journey towards discovering this simple and elegant system called Zentangle.

Little did they know then that it would grow this quickly and touch as many lives in as many ways as it has.”

And it has.  It’s changed my life tremendously.  I am so much more patient with my dear, adorable, teeth-grittingly trying children, I sleep better, and (God’s honest truth) my hypertension is improving (I did say I was a type-A personality…).

I am passionate about it and so very, very grateful for it every single day.
